Ugh! Still working diligently hard on my other side project that I am desperately waiting to share with you guys. I will share one hard lesson learned with you this week though:
My buddy and I hired a web developer off of Odesk to create this website. We “thought” we gave him all the information he needed in order to build the website we were requesting but after receiving the final product I can’t relay how ticked off I am. I’m not one to point fingers when something goes wrong, the first thing I do is look at myself and the things I could have done to contribute to this awful outcome. It turns out I am mostly to blame and here is why:
1. We decided to hire a developer from another country because the cost was cheaper.
2. We “assumed” he understood our vision for the website.
2. We paid him prior to being able to see the back end of the website (plugins, widgets, theme, etc).
In hindsight we would have much rather paid the extra money to an individual who was fluent in English to develop our website. I don’t mean to offend anyone, this is business and how can we expect to have a successful product when there is a language barrier and a lack of cultural understanding. Next time we will more than likely contact Andrea Witmer from Nuts and Bolts Media.
Lastly (and I’m still kicking myself in the butt) the developer required full payment before sending us the login details for the website. We were on a time crunch, I had this website that I’m constantly trying to keep up with, along with a newborn so I simply waived the white flag and agreed to pay so we could get going. Once we logged in and saw what we had purchased my jaw dropped to the floor. This joker literally probably spent 2 hours creating this website tops, I could have done the SAME EXACT thing in an afternoon. My blood was boiling!
Of course I contacted him asking where certain features were that we requested and have yet to get a response….. bye bye $$$$$$
We literally sent our dollars to die in vain. What a horrible leader I had been during this whole ordeal! Sun Tzu would have been utterly disappointed and ashamed if I was his pupil.
The main takeaway from this is Sun Tzus timeless quote:
“If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the general is to blame.”
– Sun Tzu
I could keep yelling and emailing this guy to get my money back or have him fix our website but it would be wasted effort. I do plan on leaving a review of the entire situation but that is where this will end. It is a very hard lesson learned but some lessons need to be lived in order to be understood…. unfortunately.
